Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook membership was initially only open to Harvard students but this was later expanded to other colleges and universities in the Boston area, the Ivy League and Stanford University. Facebook gradually added support for students at other universities within the US before opening itself to high school students and subsequently anyone over the age of 13.
