How to fix “Can’t Create File” Error When Opening Attachment in Microsoft Outlook 2007/2010

This error presents itself when you try to open a file attachment in Microsoft Outlook. This affects Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010. The exact error is:

Can’t create file: filename. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.

This problem occurs usually when Outlook cannot access the temp file the file is linked to. To resolve this problem, follow these simple steps:

- Click Start -> Run and type regedit and Click Ok

- In Registry Editor, click Edit -> Find and type OutlookSecureTempFolder and click Find Next (see pic below)

- When Registry Editor has found the entry, it will point to the location of where your Outlook temporary files are stored. It will look similar to:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\RandomNumber

- Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and navigate to this location

- Delete all the files in this folder.

- Open Microsoft Outlook and you should be able to open your attachment. (A restart may be required)
