I simply had to change the reg value from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe %1" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Winword.exe %1" and things miraculously started working. I had upgraded from a VERY old Office version (like Office95 I think) to Office 2010.
